Up-cycling is the act of making something that was old but still use-able more valuable and unique. This year Chanel for the spring/summer 2016 collection embraced this idea with Karl Lagerfeld releasing tickets of simple recyclable plywood giving away a hint at this years theme. The stage was set with the center piece being a pavillion constructed from slated wood, all of which was recycled after the show. Not only this but all the jewelry and embroideries in the 75 Chanel looks were made from wood shavings, paper and straw as well as the wedges on the heels being made from corks. The colour pallets matched the set perfectly being very natural, mainly beige with some black and white thrown in the mix.

'We had to make everything because there are no sequines in wood and straw. We had to make everything. Normally we make the embroidery exist in materials, but we had to make the materials because those things don't exist.'-Karl Lagerfeld commenting on the designs from the 2016 spring/summer chanel collection.

I think the 2016 collection from chanel is fantastic. Before this collection we were yet to see an eco friendly high couture fashion show. I am hoping that this will encourage other high end fashion designers that eco-friendly is the fashion of the future.

'In a world of simply too much stuff it is vital that eco-fashion is not just good, is not just nice, but it is in fact extrodinary' -Sass Brown-from her book REFASHIONED

Bethany Williams, a socially responsible designer, partnered with Tesco and Vauxall food bank to make a collection titled 'breakline'. Its aim was to highlight and find solutions for the hidden hunger crisis in the UK.The collection itslef is made mainly from tesco own branding materials as Bethany said that it was 'fun and makes a playful print'. The laid back simplicity of the photo-shoot highlights the importance of the message that necessity is most important. The idea of using an already existing print but one that is not used in the fashion industry itself is both ingenious and simplistic. What non fashion designs do you think would make a good fashion print?
